Dental veneers and implants are two very different dental solutions.

If you have an oral health concern, you may be wondering how your dentist can help. Fortunately, with advances in modern dentistry, most issues can be resolved very effectively. But the treatment that you choose will depend on the type of concern that you have. If you have a cosmetic issue, such as chips, cracks, unevenness or discolouration, your dentist may recommend dental veneers. If, on the other hand, you are looking for a permanent solution for a missing tooth, you may be better suited to a restorative treatment such as a dental implant. Read on to find out the difference between dental veneers and implants and which option is best suited to your needs…

What are dental veneers?

Dental veneers are a cosmetic dental treatment. They are made from thin porcelain or composite material and designed to fit over the surface of the tooth. Dental veneers can be used to conceal many cosmetic imperfections, including stains and discolouration and chips and cracks. They can also be used to resolve uneven teeth, as well as unwanted gaps between the teeth.

In order to place dental veneers, your dentist will grind off a small amount of your tooth and take an impression. Customised veneers will then be fabricated for you in a dental laboratory. The size, shape and colour of your veneers can be tailored to suit your specific needs. When your dental veneers have been made, they will be bonded to the surface of your teeth with a special cement and hardened with ultraviolet light.

What are dental implants?

While dental veneers are a cosmetic treatment, dental implants are a restorative solution. They are used to replace missing teeth and restore both oral function and the aesthetic of one’s smile.

During the dental implant procedure, a biocompatible titanium screw is inserted into the jawbone. The role of this screw is to act as a tooth root. Over the course of a few months, the implant will fuse with the jawbone. Once the implant is securely in place, an artificial tooth or crown will be attached for a natural-looking appearance.

There are a number of benefits to choosing a dental implant. Replacing a missing tooth can go a long way in improving overall dental health and enhancing one’s appearance quite considerably. Dental implants look and function just like natural teeth, which means that one can eat and drink as normal and enjoy improved speech ability.
