It is advisable that you see your dentist every six months for a check-up and clean.
If you are committed to taking care of your smile and maintaining your oral health, you may be wondering how often you should have a dental check-up. The answer depends on a few factors, such as your oral health history and current oral health status. Generally speaking, however, it’s recommended that most people visit the dentist every six months. Read on to find out more about the importance of regular dental check-ups, how they can benefit your oral health, and what you can expect at your appointment…
Why do you need dental check-ups?
Dental check-ups involve a thorough oral examination, as well as a professional clean. These appointments are important because they give your dentist the opportunity to identify any potential issues that you may not be aware of. Without regular check-ups, untreated problems can become more serious down the line, often leading to painful symptoms and the need for complex and/or expensive treatments.
What can you expect at a dental check-up?
When you see your dentist for a routine check-up, they will examine your mouth, teeth and gums. They will look for signs of any oral health issues, such as tooth decay, cavities and gum disease, as well as bite-related problems and jaw alignment issues. If necessary, your dentist will use dental x-rays to identify and confirm diagnosis of any problems that are not visible to the naked eye.
As well as a thorough examination, your dentist will also perform a clean and scale in order to remove any plaque or tartar that may be present on the teeth and along the gum line. During this process, they will use a tool known as a scaler to remove the plaque and tartar, as well as a high-powered brush. A gritty toothpaste is then used to clean the surface of the teeth for a polished look and feel.
In some cases, your dentist may recommend that a fluoride treatment is applied to your teeth after a check-up and clean. Fluoride treatments help to strengthen the enamel and protect the teeth from decay.
How often should you see your dentist?
For most people, it is advisable that you see your dentist for a check-up and clean once every six months. There are, however, a few factors that could affect how often a dental check-up is necessary for you.
If you smoke, you may need to see your dentist more than twice a year. Similarly, if you drink excessive amounts of alcohol on a regular basis, your chance of developing and experiencing oral diseases or tooth loss are higher.
Some people are genetically more prone to tooth decay and cavities than others. If you have a family history of oral disease, your dentist may recommend that you come in for more regular check-ups to be on the safe side.
