Oral Health Tips and Reminders
With a lot of dental related news in the media lately, we thought that it would be a great time to give a refresher on some oral care basics. Here are some oral health tips on maintaining a great smile by Integra Dental Robina, Queensland!
Oral Healthcare Routine
Brushing should be done twice a day and you should be spending at least 2 minutes brushing. Here are some simple tips to help you with your technique:
- Brush for a minimum of 2 minutes
- Use a soft bristle brush
- Avoid using excessive force or brushing too hard
- Spit, don’t rinse
Flossing is also an important part of your oral care regimen. Flossing has caught a lot of media attention lately with some discussing its usefulness. Simply put, flossing allows you to easily access the spaces between your teeth that may be difficult for your toothbrush to reach, allowing for a thorough clean.
To get the most out of flossing we would recommend that you:
- Ensure that you wrap a sufficient amount of floss around your index and middle fingers
- Be gentle and insert the floss sideways
- Press the floss firmly against the tooth going up, down, back and forth.
In recent years, mouthwash has also been a heavily debated subject. Alcohol free, salt water, coconut based etc. Realistically each mouthwash can be situationally dependant. For example using saltwater has benefits for reducing swelling and cleaning infection making it ideal post surgery. However saltwater is also acidic which can weaken the integrity of your teeth’s enamel.
If you are unsure about which mouthwash you should be using, it would be best to have a discussion with your dentist. They can then inform you the best option for your current situation.
As well as brushing and flossing regularly it’s also important to schedule regular appointments with your dentist. Like having your car serviced, having your dental health checked is important for keeping your natural teeth for longer. Your dentist can help you pinpoint problem areas and areas provide specific advice for you and your dental needs.
When situations become too dire, it’s definitely time to pay a visit to your dentist. Whilst it’s best to avoid serious dental problems, sometimes they are hard to avoid. Things like dental emergencies can come from sporting injuries or other accidents.
What to avoid
When it comes to your oral health, there seems to be advice and “Life Pro Tips” all over the web relating to all natural or organic methods of oral health care. When it comes to these methods, it’s best to remain cautious.
Whilst there are numerous benefits to some of these methods there may also be side effects too. When in doubt, it’s always best to consult your dentist.
